General
At the outset please accept our heartiest congratulations on having been selected for admission to Maharaja Ranjit Singh Armed Forces Preparatory Institute. We are happy to have you as a member of the AFPIAN fraternity. We hope that your stay with us will be beneficial, and that you will go on to join the NDA as a member of 144NDA course in June 2020.
A career in uniform is the finest profession that a young man can aspire to join. Your desire to join the armed forces as an officer is commendable and we shall do everything possible to ensure that you are able to fulfill this ambition.
The next two years will be utilised by us in grooming you for the National Defence Academy. This will include academic training, physical training, sports, leadership, motivation and training in officer like qualities (OLQ). The routine will be busy and you will be expected to work hard in a disciplined manner. Primarily what we expect from you is dedication and honest hard work. If that is forthcoming from you, your success is more or less assured. On our part we shall ensure that required training facilities are extended to you in an atmosphere conducive to learning.
On joining the institute you will be referred to as a Cadet. You will be assigned a Cadet number and a squadron. You will be expected to use your cadet number in all future correspondence.
Admission being granted to you is provisional and will be regularized only after you have submitted your tenth class results. In case you do not clear the tenth class examination in which you have recently appeared you will not be allowed to continue training in the institute.
Training
We have a clear and focused aim. You will be trained for joining the National Defence Academy and becoming commissioned officers in the armed forces of our country. In order to achieve this aim the following training will be imparted to you:-
- Academic training in a reputed school.
- Public speaking and improving power of verbal and written expression.
- Physical Training to include physical fitness, sports and stamina building.
- Basics of Firing.
- Leadership and motivation.
- Orientation to armed forces including visits to units / institutions.
- Preparation for the NDA entrance examination.
- Preparation for Services Selection Board (GTO, Psych testing and interview).
- Training in soft skills and officer like qualities.
You will be expected to appear in the NDA entrance examination in Sep 2019. Thereafter we expect that you will clear the examination and get a call for the SSB in early 2020. Our aim is that all of you must join the NDA in June 2020 as cadets of 144 NDA course. No deviation from this aim will be accepted and cadets desirous of preparing for any other examination not related to the armed forces will not be permitted to do so.
Choice of Service
Cadets will be required to exercise their choice of service at the time of joining the institute. Please fill up the attached form for choice of service (Appendix A). The choice expressed by you is not binding and we shall have no objection if you change the choice of service at a later stage.
Academic Training
All cadets will study in Shemrock Sr Secy School, Sec 69, SAS Nagar (Mohali). Cadets will be required to opt for the non medical stream with the following subjects:-
- English (Core)
- Computer Science / Physical Education
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Chemistry
School Uniform. Cadets will wear AFPI uniform / Mufti / Games rig when attending school. Uniform will be issued to cadets on arrival.
School Books. School Books will be provided by the school authorities on payment.
School Calendar. School Calendar / Diary will be issued to cadets on arrival. Parents may make a note of various holidays and dates of Parent Teacher Meetings as mentioned in the Calendars / Diaries.
School Bus. Cadets will commute to the school in authorized bus only. Bus will be provided by AFPI.
Attendance. 100 percent attendance will be ensured. If any cadet is to be absent from class for any reason whatsoever, prior permission of Director AFPI will be obtained.
Timings. Punctuality in attendance of classes will be ensured. School timings will be strictly followed.
Outdoor Training
Cadets will be required to take part in physical training so as to prepare them for the rigours of training at NDA. Standards to be achieved have been derived from the NDA standards and laid down physical tests will have to be cleared by cadets.
Swimming is compulsory. Cadets who are non swimmers will be taught swimming. All cadets will be required to pass swimming tests. Swimming pool is available in the institute premises.
We have a 10 meter indoor shooting range. All cadets will be trained to fire with air gun and air pistol.
Sports. It is important that as potential officers of the armed forces you must excel in sports. Training in sports will be organized as follows:-
- Team Games. Cadets will be coached in Hockey, Football, Basketball and Volleyball. Cadets are expected to excel in at least one of these games.
- Individual Games. Facilities for Squash, Golf and Tennis will be provided.
- Boxing / Martial arts. Coaching in boxing / Taekwondo / Karate will also be organised.
- Cross Country Running. Cadets will be expected to take part in cross country runs (approx 5 km) to build up their stamina.
Drill. Drill is an essential component of training. Drill training will be imparted by a trained Drill instructor.
Indemnity Bond. Cadets and their parents/ guardians will be required to sign an indemnity bond. Specimen of Indemnity Bond is attached (Appendix B).
Finances
Training at the institute is highly subsidized by the Punjab Government. Cadets will be required to pay only the school fees and other school expenses. All other training and administrative expenses are being catered for by the Government.
School fees for the entire first year (April 2018 to Mar 2019) is Rs 44,800/-which is payable in three installments as under:-
(a) First installment of Rs 15,000/- will be paid at the time of admission in April 2018.
(b) Second installment of Rs 15,000/- to be paid in Sep 2018.
(c) Third installment of Rs 14,800/ to be paid in Jan 2019.
Pocket Money. Cadets will be paid pocket money at the scale of Rs 500 per month only. This money will be paid by the institute from cadet’s individual accounts being maintained by us. Any requirement of money in excess of this approved amount will be treated on merit, based on an application for sanction of excess funds. Cadets will be required to bring Rs 6,000/- for depositing in their individual account for payment of pocket money and meeting other miscellaneous expenses. This may be paid in two installments ie first installment of Rs 3000/- and second installment of Rs 3,000/-.
Security Deposit. Rs 15,000/- is required to be deposited as a refundable security deposit. This will be returned to cadets only on successful completion of training. If the cadet leaves the institute prematurely for any reason whatsoever, the security deposit will be forfeited.
In the light of the above, cadets are required to bring with them two bank drafts as under:-
(a) Bank Draft forRs 21,500/- payable to Director Maharaja Ranjit Singh AFPI at any bank in Chandigarh / Mohali. This amount will be utilized by as under:-
(i) Rs 15,000/- will be kept in the institute accounts as refundable security deposit. This amount will be returned on successful completion of the two years training.
(ii) Rs 3,000/- will be kept in the cadets individual account maintained by the institute and used for pocket money (first installment ) of cadets and to meet any other pressing expenses of the cadet.
(iii) Rs 3,500/- for school books.
(b) Bank draft for Rs 15,000/- as first installment of school fees. This should be made payable to Principal Shemrock Sr Secy School at any bank in Chandigarh / Mohali.
Requirement of Linen and Clothing
Linen in rooms and uniforms of cadets will be provided by the institute. Cadets will be required to bring with them the under mentioned items:-
(a) Plain white shirts (full sleeves) – qty 2.
(b) Black trousers – qty 2
(c) Black shoes, Oxford pattern- qty 1 pair
(d) White socks – 3 pairs
(e) Black socks – 3 pairs
(f) Black shorts – qty 3
(g) WhiteT shirt – qty 3
(h) Handkerchiefs white – qty 6
(i) Turbans / Patkas – Maroon – qty 2 each
(j) Bath towels – qty 2
(k) Underwear / vests / private clothes – as per requirement.
(l) School Bag – Black – qty 1.
(m) White sports shoes – qty 2 pairs
(n) Toiletry items – as required; clothes hangars (6).
Note:-
- Small logo or design on White T shirt, White Socks or black shorts are acceptable.
- Toiletry items, Hangars, Buckets etc are available in our Tuck Shop on payment if required.
- Bedding items (linen, mattress, pillow etc will be provided.)
- It is expected that uniforms of the approved pattern will be ready in a few weeks. Thereafter wearing of private clothes will be forbidden and cadets will be required to be dressed in uniform as appropriate to the occasion.
Discipline
Cadets will strictly abide by the discipline policy laid down by Director AFPI. Any breach of discipline will be liable for punishment. Detailed discipline policy will be explained to cadets on arrival. The following are strictly forbidden:-
- Possession of mobile phones. (Cadets will give a certificate as per specimen attached at Appendix C that they are not in possession of a mobile phone.)
- Consumption of liquor or drugs.
- Driving a car/ scooter/ motor cycle.
- Leaving the institute without permission.
- Lady visitors are not permitted in cadets cabins.
- Speaking in any language other than English.
- Being late for parade, absent from parade or improperly turned out.
- Keeping money in excess of authorized amount.
- Stealing, cheating or telling lies.
Cadets may bring their laptops along with them if they so desire. However, laptops will be deposited with Squadron Commanders on arrival and these may be used only for study purposes under supervision. Use of laptops in cadet’s cabins in an unsupervised manner is strictly prohibited. Cyber café with internet facility is available in the Institute Library.
Music systems of large wattage are not permitted, however cadets may bring personal music players which may be used such that there is no disturbance in adjacent cabins / corridor.
Cadets are not permitted to keep cash in excess of Rs 500/- with them in their cabins.
We follow a very strict anti ragging policy. No senior cadet or member of the faculty has the power or permission to carry out any form or ragging. We will do everything possible to ensure compliance of this. No such incident of such a nature has come to light in any of the previous courses. If however, any cadet experiences any discomfort or unpleasantness, please bring it to the notice of the authorities and expeditious action will be taken.
Homesickness.Some cadets in the first few days do experience a degree of home sickness. Please do not worry on this account. You will have a ‘buddy’ from your amongst your course mates and an ‘overstudy’ from the senior course who will help you to get comfortable and settle down well in the new environment. Any cadet requiring special attention in this regard can always turn to his SqnCdr for advice and guidance.
Honour Code.A suitable Honour Code for cadets has been evolved. Any violation of the Honour Code will be viewed seriously. The Honour Code is as under:-
“I will be truthful, trust worthy, honest and forth right under all circumstances. I will always follow the righteous path and constantly encourage my comrades to do so. I undertake to live up to the high values and principles of this great institution and the services which I aspire to join. “
Please memorise the Honour Code and understand it fully before you report to the institute.
All cadets will reside in the institute premises in assigned cabins only. There is no provision for ‘day scholars’.
Punctuality in all parades / official functions is imperative. Please ensure that you are not late from any place of duty by even one minute.
Secular Character of the Institute
The armed forces of our country are totally secular and apolitical. You will be expected to conduct yourself in consonance with these principles. Discussion of religion or politics in the institute is strictly forbidden. Religion is a private matter and may be practiced privately.
Cadets will be expected to say the following prayer at Muster fall-in every morning:-
“Dear God, we pray to thee for thy guidance and support in our endeavour to join the National Defence Academy and become leaders of men in the armed forces of our country.
We pray for physical strength to face the trials and tribulations that lie ahead of us and the tenacity to overcome every hurdle that comes our way.
Ignite in us the desire to excel in our academic pursuits and the wisdom to apply the knowledge that we acquire in the journey of life.
Awaken in us the admiration for honest dealing and clean thinking, and guide us to choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong.
Grant us the courage which knows no compromise or retreat when truth and righteousness are in peril so that we may never falter in doing our duty to our country and to the men we command.”
Certificate for joining the NDA
All cadets will be required to give a certificate that they will appear in the NDA entrance examination and will join the NDA if selected. In case a cadet does not appear in the NDA entrance examination or, having been selected for NDA he fails to join the NDA, he will be liable to pay cost of training at a rate to be laid down by the Director AFPI (Appendix D).
Withdrawal of Cadet from the Institute
In case a cadet does not perform satisfactorily he will be suitably warned and the parents will also be informed that he is liable to be withdrawn. A cadet may be withdrawn on any of the following grounds:-
- Withdrawal on Academic Grounds. In case the cadet does not perform well in his studies he will be suitably warned and given an opportunity to improve his performance. If the cadet still does not improve he will be withdrawn from the institute on academic grounds. The cadet may however continue to study in the sameschool provided it is acceptable to the school authorities.
- Withdrawal on Out Door Training (ODT) Grounds. In case a cadet does not pass his laid down PT/ Swimming tests or does not take adequate interest in outdoor training or is found to be obese (more than 20% in excess of his ideal weight), he will be suitably warned and given an opportunity to improve his performance. In case there is still no improvement in his performance he will be withdrawn on ODT grounds. The cadet may however continue to study in the same school provided it is acceptable to the school authorities.
- Withdrawal on Disciplinary Grounds. If a cadet indulges in serious acts of indiscipline or is a habitual offender he will be suitably warned and punished. If there is still no improvement he will be withdrawn on disciplinary grounds. In this eventuality the cadet will also normally be withdrawn from the school.
- Withdrawal on Medical Grounds. If a cadet becomes medically unfit during training he will be withdrawn on medical grounds. The cadet may continue to study in the same school at the discretion of school authorities.
Payment by Cdts if Withdrawn. If a cadet is withdrawn from the institute on academics / outdoor training grounds or on account of poor discipline he will be liable to pay cost of training at a rate to be determined by the Director AFPI.In all such cases the security deposit will NOT be refunded.
Resignation. Cadets desirous of resigning from the institute may do so. In such cases the security deposit will NOT be refunded. Cadets who resign within the first four weeks will not invite any punitive charges; however any cadet resigning after the first four weeks of training will be required to pay cost of training at a rate to be laid down by Director AFPI besides forfeiting the security deposit.
Leave Policy
Cadets will be granted leave in accordance with leave policy. It must be clearly understood that leave is not a right but a privilege. Grant of leave will be subject to training commitments which will be paramount. During the school vacations cadets who are weak in academics / outdoor training or are undergoing punishment may be required to stay back for extra coaching at the discretion of Director AFPI. Any cadet who absents himself from the institute premises without due permission will be deemed to be absent without leave and will be liable for disciplinary action.
Normally we allow the cadets to proceed on leave only if they are accompanied by their parents / local guardians. If it is not possible for the parents or local guardians to come to AFPI to accompany the cadet, and the cadet is required to be sent on leave unaccompanied, we shall require a certificate to this effect signed by the parents authorizing us to send the cadet on leave alone. Please see Appendix E attached.
Liberty. Cadets desirous of visiting the market in Mohali / Chandigarh / Panchkula will have to apply for Liberty. Liberty is short leave for a few hours and does not include absence overnight. Overnight liberty will only be permitted in exceptional circumstances.
Local Guardian
Parents of cadets may nominate up to two persons residing in Chandigarh / Mohali / Panchkula as local guardians who can visit the cadet in the institute premises during visiting hours. Format for nomination of local guardians is attached (Appendix F).

Policy: Parents & Local Guardians meeting Cadets
Parents / local guardians may meet cadets on Sundays / Holidays. Such meetings can take place in the ante room / Tuck Shop / Office area (24×7 Room). Visitors should refrain from going to the cadet’s cabins.
In case any parent / local guardian desires to meet a cadet on a working day, permission of the Squadron Commander / Warden will have to be obtained. We generally do not encourage visitors meeting cadets when training is in progress.
